Sarah Horowitz recently spent 3 weeks in April at the Frans Masereel Centrum, Kasterlee, Belgium, a printmaking residency. Her latest suite of etchings and drawings are all based on the natural environment. Utilizing memory as well as direct observation Horowitz explores formal elements of her subject. Memory of an object is the most important element of her work. Horowitz explains, “In working from life, I have to forget every poppy and artichoke I have ever seen before in order to see anew and to see what is in front of me, but in that same moment, I draw on memory to create meaning.”
