Born in Detroit in 1918, Mr. Hollingsworth studied at the Navy School of Photography in 1942 before service. From 1948-50 he attended the California School of Fine Art (now known as the San Francisco Art Institute), studying with Minor White and Edward Weston. Robert Hollingsworth's work is included in “The Moment of Seeing: Minor White at the California School of Fine Arts”, published in 2006. This book examines the first fine-art photography department in the United States; which was founded by Ansel Adams in 1948.
Robert A. Hollingsworth made photography his life-long career. He playfully coined the term plagraphy (a mixture of the words plagiarism and phototgraphy) to acknowledge that his photographs capture scenes created by nature or others.
He tragically died in an automobile accident in 2007. |
