Entity, is our third solo exhibit by Portland artist Leiv Fagereng. A meticulous painter, Fagereng uses fine brushstrokes and thin color glazes in his cryptic, emotive portraits layered over outdoor settings that suggest snapshots. Faces slip spectrally in and out of opacity, mirage-like, revealing the scene behind them as in double-exposed film.
These canvases denote the impermanence of memory- the background images of seashores, calm forest streams and iconic locations such as a Venetian canal and the Eiffel Tower could be remembered scenes from a life. Fagereng's floating visages seem to be reveling in- or struggling with- fading places and faces, in pursuit of lucidity, control and beauty.
