Froelick Gallery presents Hyperbole is Your Friend, the latest solo exhibit by Eastern Oregon artist Gabriel Manca. In these mixed media works, Manca recontextualizes found objects- in this case, discarded or secondhand art from free boxes, yard sales, thrift stores- by obscuring the original image in part or whole. Many of these surfaces are painted over and covered in meticulous ink line work that traces contours and emboldens edges, imbuing these pictures with illustrative and maplike qualities. Some contain recognizable space and forms such as airplanes and flowers, hinting at the work's previous appearance, while others seem to be wholly abstracted.
Far from cavalier in his approach to altering another artist's work, Manca ruminates on what will be lost if he proceeds,
considering issues of authorship, perceived value and folk art versus fine art. The underlying images have a second life as compositional frameworks for Manca's paintings. He says,“I both deconstruct and reconstruct and my influence over this imagery is meant to be as confusing as it is descriptive.”
