FIRE

As a countermeasure against winter's chill, we asked our represented Froelick Gallery artists to produce work on the theme of fire, entirely open to their interpretation, for Fire Department. Their responses to this invitation, in diverse media, including wood sculpture, wet-plate collodian photography, ballpoint pen, oil, acrylic, gouache, and papier mâché, are many. One artist has manipulated text from Dante's Inferno, while others allude to fire in common sayings. They have taken oblique as well as direct views of their subject- fire as reflected in a pair of eyeglasses or contained in the glowing ember of a cigarette; it's evidence in a scorched surface or distant smoke.
