Portland artist Gwen Davidson returns to Froelick Gallery with a solo exhibition titled Reflections. She approaches her landscape subjects- all locations in the Columbia River Gorge and on the Oregon Coast- as composite views, seen at once from a distance, up close and through her own memories. Painting first on individual papers in various textures and hues, Davidson cuts them in to strips of many sizes. Affixing these to her canvas surfaces, she describes rock formations, hills, hazy blue skies, ripples and shadows on bodies of water. Moving between defined natural forms and densely layered abstraction, Davidson guides the viewer through each composition by way of fluid acrylic washes and crisp edges, staggered stairways of thin paper slivers and broad bands of color with a keen intuition honed over the course of her thirty-year career as an artist.
