Rick Bartow "Crow Dance"
acrylic, graphite on canvas, 72 x 96 inches
Froelick Gallery is very proud to announce Horizon with Crow, Rick Bartow's thirteenth solo exhibition at his home gallery. One of Oregon's most celebrated artists, this show coincides with Things You Know But Cannot Explain, Bartow's retrospective at the University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, which features a carefully curated selection of important drawings, paintings, sculpture and prints from the past 35 years.
2015 finds Bartow in the midst of a deeply prolific period; his output of acrylic paintings on small panels and large canvases, his drawings on paper in pastel, graphite and tempera are the yield of an artist who believes foremost in the work of artmaking. A lifetime of personal stories, voracious reading and looking, of struggle and recovery, the marks of personal and cultural tragedy and wry humor are bound together in his rich pictorial language populated with crows, coyotes, dancers and transformation scenes. Past and ongoing health issues provide further impetus; he is driven to make what he can while his full faculties of sight and dexterity are available to him. In the face of these challenges, this body of work shows Bartow to be an artist at the apex of his incredible skills, with a wealth of stories still to tell and images to share.
