For Rick Bartow, the act of creating an artwork is always inherently ceremonial. It is his daily thanksgiving, his therapy, his work. He begins intuitively, perhaps by rubbing a swath of thick, black pastel or sketching a non-representational form onto a sheet of paper. He then sets about solving the problems he has created for himself.
