Still, Blue opens at First Street Gallery in New York City February 4th

For Still, Blue, 25 artists, including Benny Fountain, have each agreed to produce a new still life painting incorporating the color electric blue. Artists know that strong, insistent colors are challenging to use in painting and blue is especially charged -- it can connote sadness, anger, optimism, and divinity; it can be both cool and hot, recede and advance.
In this exhibition, a diverse group of artists responds to the challenge of incorporating this complicated color into their work. Wassily Kandinsky's wrote that "almost without exception, blue refers to the domain of abstraction and immateriality" and featured artists will examine how this understanding of the color might relate to still life painting. The exhibition will showcase the variety in contemporary still life, and at the same time the recurrent use of the color blue will provide connections between the works. Thus, viewers will have a point of entry into the paintings.
Zeuxis formed in 1995 to explore the contemporary possibilities of still life painting. Its strength is in how the diverse artists who make up the group work together to respond creatively to a single theme.
